St. Martin de Porres Gala Nov.5, 2011

Saint Martin de Porres High School is a Cristo Rey HS  located in Waukegan, IL. Grandpa Frank was posthumously awarded the St. Martin dePorress Spirit Award at their Novemeber 5th Gala.  From the program booklet: (edited somewhat)  "Along with Bishop George Rassas, Frank Kreuz was one of the founding fathers of St. Martin de Porress High School.  In 2001, a feasibility study was initiated to ascertain the viability of opening a Cristo Rey High School in Waukegan.  The school opened in 2004 and was named after St. Martin de Porres, a name suggested by Frank.  Frank Kreuz was a member of the first Board of Trustees and worked tirelessly to obtain jobs and funds for the fledgling high school.  One member of the SMdP Board who worked with Frank said he redefined the meaning of "retirement" for her, and another called Frank "my hero".  Frank was truly a humble man who inspired other individuals to get involved in making the dream of a Cristo Rey school become a reality in Waukegan.  At his death, Char, Frank's wife established the FRANK KREUZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND for tuition assistance to St. Martin de Porres students.  It is the first fully-endowed named scholarship fund at the school. With gratitude, we are proud to give the St. Martin de Porres Award to Frank Kreuz posthumously."

The St, Martin de Porres Award is presented to individuals exemplifing the spirit of St. Martin de Porres by embracing the St. Martin de Porres High School community and people in need in Lake County with a 'profound love which comes from pure faith and humility of spirit'.

From:  More Than a Dream by G.R.Kearney ;  'The Cristo Rey story began in Chicago in 1990.  The Jesuits had a dream to start a new college prep high school for the children of Hispanic working poor.  In 1996 the first Cristo Rey High School was opened in Pilsen, a predominately Mexican-immigrant inner-city neighborhood in Chicago.

Today, there are almost 200 Cristo Rey High Schools throughout the USA.
